The Kentucky State Board of Elections is seeking the dismissal of the US Department of Justice lawsuit against Kentucky's secretary of state over his refusal to hand over private voter information to the federal government.

This week saw several intervener parties — including the ACLU and the League of Women Voters of Kentucky — file papers to join the case. Now, the state Board of Elections is requesting that the US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky dismiss the suit altogether.

A board spokesperson said the board has cooperated with federal officials while ensuring any disclosures align with state and federal law, including providing redacted versions of the voter registration list that withhold sensitive information.

The DOJ has argued the full disclosure will allow the federal government to ensure clean voter rolls and election transparency, but the state's top election official has said the information the DOJ is seeking would amount to a "data breach" on his end.

Kentucky is one of 29 states being sued by the DOJ over sensitive voter information, including Social Security and driver's license numbers.
