Lexington's women to receive special recognition this Sunday

Visit Lex

The Lexington History Museum and the Lexington League of Women Voters are celebrating International Women's Day in a unique way. Since January they've been collecting stories submitted by Lexingtonians who want to honor a special woman in their life. Sunday afternoon at 3 there will be a public ceremony at the Stand monument at South Mill and West Vine downtown.

"We are going to read all of the names of the people who have been submitted. So I think it's just going to be a really neat opportunity to just show the volumes of women that have made an impact on people," said Lexington League of Women Voters president Liza Holland.

On a recent episode of WUKY's Lex Talk History podcast, Lexington History Museum executive director Mandy Higgins said those essay entries will also be included in a forthcoming exhibit.

"The other thing that's so exciting about this for me is the reminder to Lexingtonians that their history, their individual history, matters to how we see the city," Higgins said.

The event takes place this Sunday March 8th at 3 p.m. at the Stand monument at South Mill and West Vine.
