11th Annual Frank X Walker Festival underway in Danville

The Frank X Walker Creative Arts Festival celebrates the literary, visual, and performing arts, and is produced annually in honor of Walker, one of the leading literary voices in Kentucky, a 1979 Danville High School graduate and the state’s 26th Poet Laureate.

Tuesday, March 3, 7 p.m., "Our Civil Wars"

A look at the contributions of Kentucky’s Black soldiers during the Civil War, through the lens of Walker’s 2024 book of poetry, Load in Nine Times. Walker will read from his book and participate in a panel discussion that includes Steve T. Phan from the Camp Nelson National Monument, historian Dr. Benjamin Fitzpatrick, and author Dr. Kristine Yohe. This event kicks off Boyle County’s year-long America 250 celebration of our nation’s semiquincentennial anniversary. (At Danville High School)

Wednesday, March 4, 7 p.m., "Stumbling Stones: the John Rosenberg Story"

A stirring one-man play about Holocaust survivor, civil rights champion, and Kentucky hero John Rosenberg. Written and performed by actor/attorney Jeff Sherr, this biographical play tells the story of Rosenberg’s lifelong pursuit of fairness and justice in Kentucky and beyond, against the backdrop of the American Civil Rights Movement. Followed by a discussion with Sherr and Rosenberg. (At Danville High School)

Thursday, March 5, 7 p.m., Danville High School Choir Concert

A concert inspired by origin stories of all sorts. (At Danville High School)

Friday, March 6, 7 p.m., Festival Awards

A celebration of the arts in the Greater Danville community (Danville, Boyle County and each of its surrounding counties) Presenting the K-12 Creative Arts Contest winners of awards in poetry, playwriting, and songwriting. (At Danville High School)

Saturday, March 7, 2-3 p.m., “Origin Story” Art Exhibit Reception

In honor of the winners of the visual art and illustrated poetry winners of the Creative Arts Contest. The exhibit will run through March 27. (At Boyle Co. Public Library).

The Festival is produced by Danville Schools Friends of the Arts, in partnership with — and considerations provided by — Boyle County Public Library, Camp Nelson National Monument, Boyle County’s America 250 committee, AppalReD Legal Aid, Plaid Elephant Books, and Centre College.  

All events begin at 7 p.m. at Danville High School except for the Saturday reception at Boyle County Public Library, 2-3 p.m.

Admission: Free of charge, though reservations are recommended for "Stumbling Stones" and the Festival Awards.
