State of emergency extended in Lexington

Mayor Linda Gorton today extended the city’s state of emergency through Wednesday

“Our winter weather challenges continue because of the bitter cold temperatures,” Gorton said. “The state of emergency allows us to fully mobilizes our public safety resources to help residents handle the severe weather we are experiencing.”

Gorton continued to ask residents to stay off the streets, “Our people have made a huge difference by staying safe at home, allowing our street crews and first responders to get their work done,” she said.

The snow emergency also allows the delay of the implementation of the city’s ordinance requiring property owners to clear sidewalks. “In cases of extreme weather or during an emergency, the Mayor can postpone the requirement for property owners to clear sidewalks. While clean sidewalks are important, under current conditions, I think clearing them would be dangerous for many people,” Gorton said.
