Fayette County schools sticking with NTI days through at least Wednesday

Fayette County Public Schools is opting for another NTI, or non-traditional learning, day Wednesday.

With Fayette County yet to thaw out from multiple inches of snow and ice, FCPS is opting for its third NTI day in a row this week. So far this academic year has included a mix of both NTI and traditional snow days.

In 2025, the district had considered dropping the NTI option, citing concerns about its effectiveness and the lack of reimbursement from federal food service programs on those days, but ultimately decided to keep NTI as a backup.

The commissioner of education can approve up to 10 NTI days per school year.

During discussions about whether to add more emergency days last year, state Rep. Tim Truitt said he views traditional snow days as ideal for less dangerous events when kids can actually get outside and play.

"The best time that an NTI day is used is when you've been to school two or three days that week and then the weather's coming in on the weekend and you... do an NTI day for review, to enrich some of the activities that we've done," he said. "But every district does their NTI differently."

FCPS describes an NTI day as one where students complete "high-quality assignment packets, or use their Chromebooks or home computers for virtual lessons."

A decision on whether or not there will be after-school activities Wednesday will be announced by noon that day.
