Freezing temperatures create new challenges for road crews

Kentucky Department of Transportation

More than 15-hundred trucks have been out around the clock for the Kentucky Department of Transportation. As temperatures fell, it became more difficult to clear roads.

"Once the temperature gets below a certain amount, what we use to treat the roads simply just doesn't work as well," Governor Andy Beshear said during a press briefing on Sunday.

Here in Lexington, more than 40 trucks and around 100 people have been working around the clock in 12-hour shifts. Director of Streets and Roads Rob Allen said crews did everything possible before nightfall on Sunday, but ice continues to be an issue and it could take several days to clean up the mess.

Kentucky National Guard units are deployed across the state to assist with debris clean up, welfare checks, distributing supplies and other emergencies.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for the state.

Governor Andy Beshear will hold a press briefing Monday morning at 9:00 with the latest winter weather updates.
