Lexington's most diverse city council will see a shakeup after elections

The next Lexington Urban County Council elections will see major turnover and the possible return of a former councilwoman once barred from city hall.

With a third of the 15-member council passing on the chance to run for reelection, changes are coming to the horseshoe in council chambers.

The race could also see a rematch between District 4's Emma Curtis and the previous occupant of that seat, Brenda Monarrez.

Monarrez was accused of sexual assault by a past council member, with a family court judge finding probable cause and issuing a protective order that kept Monarrez from entering city hall. Monarrez has consistently denied the allegations.

Now, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports she's laying the groundwork for another run, filing paperwork to fundraise for the Fourth District race.
