Hearing for former Kentucky sheriff accused of murdering district judge hits roadblock

A bond hearing and a status report in the murder trial of former Letcher County sheriff Shawn Mickey Stines ended abruptly on Thursday without any testimony or legal arguments after Judge Christopher Cohron announced there would be a delay.

"Before we move forward, due to the nature of the case, we want to make sure it's done correctly and handled appropriately," Judge Cohron said.

Cohron did not go into details of the delay but said the hearing would be reset later to hear all pending motions.

Stines was arrested and charged with shooting and killing District Court Judge Kevin Mullins in September of 2024. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras inside the judge's chambers.

The motive behind the shooting is still unclear, but Stines's attorney claims their client was and is mentally ill.
