Double punch of snow and freezing temps set to hit Central Kentucky

LFUCG

A stretch of bitter winter weather will move into Lexington tonight and last through the weekend.

Lexington will be under a Winter Weather Advisory starting at 7 p.m. tonight and lasting through 10 a.m. Friday. Drivers can expect between 2-4 inches of snow and slick travel in that time frame.

Rob Allen, director of streets and roads, said his department has already been at work.

"We were fortunate enough with this event we could start pre-treating last night at 10 p.m.," he said Thursday. "We pre-treated the bridges and hills and started on the ranked roads."

Daryn Morris with Fayette County Public Schools said the city and the district have been more closely coordinating ahead of weather events like this one.

"We'll be out overnight checking roads, reviewing those, with the storm, looking at accumulation, temperature, and then all the routes that we have," he reported.

A second winter system will arrive Saturday night into Sunday, bringing more snow, followed by arctic temperatures as low as zero or into the negatives.

After a bout of severe winter weather last January, Lexington added five new plows, more salt spreaders, and made plans to bring in new contractors if needed.
