Fayette County Board of Education member Tyler Murphy, representing District 2 Fayette, speaks on behalf of Superintendent Demetrus Liggins’s contract renewal during the Fayette County Public School Board meeting on January 27, 2025, at the Fayette County Public Schools Central office in Lexington, Ky.

The audit approved during Monday night's FCPS board meeting will provide a detailed review of budgeting, financial controls, district processes, and department operations, and will allow for a forensic audit if any concerns are identified.

FCPS Board Chair Tyler Murphy said findings will pinpoint improvements needed to align with the district’s New Way Forward strategic plan and strengthen public trust.

"We're saying to the community, hey, we're inviting an outside, an external independent source, to come in. Someone that has no agenda or no focus other than following the scope of work that we've given them. And they're going to be honest and transparent with the results," Murphy said. "I would say let the process work out. It's something that we want to be done right vs very quickly."

Murphy added that the approved audit will supplement, not replace or duplicate, the special examination currently being conducted by Kentucky State Auditor Allison Ball.

District leaders also agreed to hire the nationally ranked accounting firm Weaver and Tidwell, as recommended by the audit committee.
