Kentucky falls to Louisville

UK Athletics

Kentucky was shut out for the first time since 2022 on Saturday as the Cats fell to Louisville 41-0 at L&N Stadium.

Cutter Boley passed for 107 yards for UK, while Ty Bryant led the Cats with 12 tackles.

Kentucky (5-7) got the ball first and the Cats made a first down when Boley connected with JJ Hester for a six-yard gain. However, the drive would stall and UK punted the ball away. Louisville took over at its own 25 yard line.

The Cards made one first down on their drive but a forced fumble by UK’s Lorenzo Cowan put U of L behind the sticks and they would punt it back to the Cats.

UK started at their own 11 yard line but made a first down on a 15-yard run by Kendrick Law. However, the Cats would be forced to punt again and the Cards blocked the punt, recovered it and returned it to the UK 10. Four plays later, Miller Moss scored on a quarterback sneak to give U of L the lead. Cooper Ranvier added the point after and Louisville led 7-0 with 4:44 to play in the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive, the Cats would get a first down via penalty, then on a Boley to Willie Rodriguez completion. A Dante Dowdell rush produced another first down, getting UK to the Louisville 33. However, an intentional grounding call stalled the drive and Jacob Kauwe missed a 52-yard field goal, giving the Cards the ball with 2:07 left in the first.

Louisville would drive deep into UK territory as the first quarter ended with the Cards ahead 7-0. On the first play of the second quarter, Ranvier converted a 34-yard field goal and U of L led 10-0.

Kentucky’s next drive began at its own nine yard line after a penalty on the kickoff return. The Cats went three-and-out and were forced to punt.

Louisville took over at its own 20 and the Cards needed eight plays to cover that distance. On fourth-and-one, Moss found Jacob Stewart for a 43-yard touchdown and Ranvier added the PAT to give the Cards a 17-0 lead.

Kentucky punted again and Louisville added another Ranvier field goal to go up 20-0. That would be the halftime score.

The teams would open the third quarter with three consecutive punts. On UK’s second possession of the period, the Cats tried to make something happen on offense, going for it on a fourth-and-one. However, Boley’s pass fell incomplete and the Cards took over at the UK 15. Two plays later, Shaun Boykins scored on a five-yard touchdown and Ranvier added the PAT to make it 27-0. That would be the score after three periods.

Louisville added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin of victory.
