Blue, Hassett lead Kentucky past Monmouth 104-46

The Kentucky women’s basketball team opened the game on a 21-1 run on their way to a 104-46 win over Monmouth on Thursday night inside Historic Memorial Coliseum. Sophomore Lexi Blue had the best game of her UK career, making 6 of 7 from behind the arc on her way to a career-high 18 points.

Blue had plenty of help from her teammates in the victory. Amelia Hassett had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Teonni Key and Asia Boone each had 14. In fact, all 10 Wildcats who played scored in the win.

The Cats made 17 of 36 (47.2 percent) from behind the arc in the game.

Kentucky (2-0) scored first on a baseline jumper from Strack. After a Monmouth free throw, Teonni Key and Amelia Hassett converted layups and Jordan Obi hit two jumpers to make it 10-1. A putback basket by Kaelyn Carroll made it 12-1 and forced a Monmouth timeout.

Out of the timeout, Asia Boone scored on a driving layup, then hit a three to make it 17-1. Key followed with a driving layup and Carroll scored on another putback, increasing the lead to 21-1.

Monmouth hit its first field goal, a three-pointer, with 1:43 left in the quarter. Boone answered with a three of her own to make it 24-4, which would be the score after one period.

Lexi Blue opened the second quarter scoring with a three from the right wing. Obi scored on a putback and converted the subsequent free throw to extend the lead to 30-4. Blue would hit another three, capping a 12-0 run that made it 36-4. A 9-2 run later in the quarter extended the lead to 45-9.

Kentucky closed the half on an 8-3 run and led 55-18 at the break. Blue led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, doubling her career high in just eight minutes of game action.

The onslaught continued in the second half, with the Cats scoring nine consecutive points to open the third quarter, taking a 64-18 lead in the process.

Monmouth would cut into the lead, getting within 69-25 before UK got a three from Boone, a Morgan layup and two Key free throws to lead 76-25. Blue hit two more threes to end the third period, with UK leading 84-34.

The Cats would take their largest lead, 58 points on a three by Boone with 14 seconds left.

Kentucky returns to action on Sunday, visiting Buffalo. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on ESPN Plus.
