New work zone speed cameras are slated for installation in Fayette County

Josh James / WUKY

At least two speed cameras will be set up in Fayette County near roadwork sites this fall.

The speed enforcement cameras are part of a wider effort to cut down on increasing injuries and deaths at road construction and maintenance sites along busy roads and highways.

"Last year, we saw over 1,200 crashes in a work zone, nearly 300 injuries, and seven fatalities," Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Allen Blair said. "Our goal is to drive those numbers down to zero."

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the first two cameras in Fayette County will be located on U.S. 25 between mile markers 7.8 and 9.6, and Kentucky 418 between markers 0 and 1.8.

The automated cameras will be monitored by on-site police officers who can choose to pursue violators and hand out real-time tickets, but the cameras will not result in any citations through the mail. Drivers will also be alerted to their presence with signs and flashing lights.

"It's required to be marked, to give people plenty of notice that this is an active work zone where we're using these speed enforcement cameras," Blair said.

KYTC has not said exactly when the cameras will be up and running, but drivers should expect to see them in the near future.
