Commuters and pedestrians who frequent the section of New Circle between Development Drive and Bryan Station Road know it can be a challenge, with few hospitable street crossings and on-and-off sidewalks.
Imagine North New Circle Road intends to revamp the 1.8 mile stretch of road in a three-phase project expected to reach into the next decade.
Council member and north Lexington native James Brown says now is the time for residents to offer their advice on what's needed.
"That portion of that corridor was identified as one of the most unsafe corridors in the state," Brown said, adding he appreciates the "injection of federal money to making safety improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles."
The deadline could run into 2031.
"This project is going to be underway for a long period of time and I think there's going to be ample opportunity for public engagement," Brown said.
As for the hassle of the roadwork itself, the at-large councilman said he believes it's necessary in the long run.
"In the end, I think the inconvenience that it's going to create for neighbors, vehicles, and just the construction... it's going to be well worth it," he said.
Transportation officials are hosting an open house Thursday, Nov. 6, for community members to weigh in on the tentative plan, which they hope will become a final plan by the end of the year.
