High-profile Kentucky leaders are applauding the release of the 20 remaining living hostages in Gaza and the accompanying ceasefire deal.
Congressman Andy Barr, a U.S. Senate candidate who has closely aligned himself with President Donald Trump, hailed the events as "an incredible victory" and dubbed Trump the "President of Peace."
Barr had pushed for Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Sen. Rand Paul wrote that, while he has disagreements with the president, the deal represents a "historic" plan and thanked the president for "delivering where others could not."
Meanwhile, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear — who is overseas — faces calls to clarify his stance on US military support for Israel as he teases a potential run for the White House in 2028. The governor has called Israel a "critical ally," but has shied away from direct comments on the war in Gaza. His office did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
WUKY reached out to the Kentucky Democratic Party for comment on the hostage release, but did not receive a statement.
Later Monday, the bipartisan co-chairs of the Kentucky-Israel Caucus posted a release, praising Trump for his "determination and moral clarity."
"After more than two years of anguish, fear, and uncertainty, today we finally rejoice in the full release of every hostage held in Gaza. This moment is one of answered prayers, for the families who never gave up hope, for the people of Israel who have endured unimaginable pain, and for all who stand against terror and oppression," the statement said.
The statement was attributed to Republican state Sen. Lindsey Tichenor and Democratic state Rep. Daniel Grossberg.
