City officials cut the ribbon on Cardinal Run Park North

Lexington Parks and Recreation

City and community leaders were on hand to cut the ribbon today on Cardinal Run Park North - the first large, regional park to be built in Lexington in more than 25 years. Mayor Linda Gorton says the new space joins Cardinal Run Park South to become the city's fifth largest regional park.

The land along Parkers Mill Road was donated to the community in 1997. Cardinal Run Park South opened in the early 2000s. But the Northern space had to wait until 2022 when Lexington received more than 10 million dollars of American Rescue Plan funding. Phase One of Cardinal Run North is now complete and comprises two miles of natural hiking trails, six pickleball courts, a basketball court, four youth multipurpose fields, a large playground, a dog park with two paddocks and ample tree coverage, one mile of paved shared use trail and two picnic shelters. The city worked with local firm Brandstetter Carroll, Inc. on the design, based on public input.
