Kentucky defense continuing to work on consistency

UK Athletics

Following Wednesday’s Kentucky football practice, defensive coordinator Brad White discussed the Cats’ last game at South Carolina and the upcoming game against Georgia.

After watching the South Carolina tape, White liked some things that his defense did.

“It’s not for a lack of effort. It comes down to execution and (just a little bit) makes a difference,” White said. “You just slide past a receiver on a fourth and three or you’re supposed to ricochet in an ‘A’ gap and you get bumped out into a ‘B’ gap and it creates a bad rush lane. Just the little things that happen, extend drives.”

The Gamecocks scored on their first drive of the game, but White liked how his unit responded after that.

“I thought our guys rebounded after that first drive,” White said. “Sometimes, you’ve just got to get settled in.”

White and the UK coaching staff are continuing to preach the little things that will allow the Cats to make improvements on defense.

“(South Carolina quarterback) LaNorris (Sellers) made a couple of plays with his legs,” White said. “So, he had three scrambles where he had guys touching him for sacks. Credit to him, good player, but obviously, we need to finish those. If you finish those, I think people are talking about it (in a) completely different feel. But you’ve got to make them. If you want to be the defense that you want to be, if you want to take that next step, then you make those plays. And that’s what we need to do. We need to consistently make those plays.”

White knows that his unit must become more consistent, something he has discussed often this fall.

“We’ve talked about it before. It’s got to be every single play and you don’t know which on it is that’s going to make the difference,” White said. “That’s football. It’s not going to be perfect but in some of those situations when you’ve got a chance to get off the field, you’ve got to get off the field. It’s the consistent execution. That’s what it comes down to. If it’s 70 plays, 63 of them are really good. (Against South Carolina) was the least explosives we’ve given up all year.”

This week, the Cats travel to Georgia, where they will face another talented offense. White has been impressed with what the Bulldogs do on that side of the ball.

“I think they do a great job of finding ways to get their playmakers the ball, whether it’s the running backs, whether it’s (Zachariah) Branch. So it’s not just a challenge from a talent standpoint, it’s also a challenge from a scheme and coaching standpoint.”

The Cats hope to improve on consistency and finishing plays as they get back on the field on Saturday.
