Court overturns London council vote, returns Randall Weddle to office

Randall Weddle has been reinstated as mayor in London, Kentucky. A court decision reversed the recent ouster of Weddle by the city council.

Weddle has been at the center of a controversy that's split the southeastern Kentucky town.

In early September, the London city council voted to remove Weddle from office, citing a number of allegations. Ultimately three charges stuck. They included accusations that the former mayor declined to publish an ordinance, agreed to a $5 million mortgage on behalf of the city without council approval, and did not fill vacant seats on London's ethics commission.

The council vote angered some residents, who felt the move was anti-democratic and the matter should have been resolved at the ballot box.

The city went on to immediately appoint a new mayor.

But a circuit court ruling has upended that decision, finding that the city failed to produce sufficient grounds for Weddle's removal. That puts Weddle back in the top spot.

While the ruling is being called "final," LEX18 reports it is open to appeal.
