Explosion at Borden Dairy Plant in London, KY, injures four

LEX-18

Officials with the London-Laurel Co. Economic Development Authority have confirmed that four people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a cleaning barrel exploded at the plant on Wednesday morning.

Officials issued the following statement:

"The chemical involved in the incident has been identified as Hyperflex (Acid Sanitizer), which contains phosphoric acid and nitric acid. While this product is corrosive and can cause significant health effects with direct contact, we are relieved to report that no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time."

The London, Kentucky area's Laurel County Emergency Management Director, Jerry Rains, assured the public that the hazard was quickly contained, and decontamination operations were immediately performed.
