Fayette County Board of Education member Tyler Murphy, representing District 2 Fayette, speaks on behalf of Superintendent Demetrus Liggins’s contract renewal during the Fayette County Public School Board meeting on January 27, 2025, at the Fayette County Public Schools Central office in Lexington, Ky.

FCPS Chair Tyler Murphy released a statement Tuesday calling for a special board meeting next Tuesday to authorize “an external operational audit, investigation, and review of our budget, finance, and internal control systems.”

Murphy tells WUKY that, now that the district has a clear picture of the year's budget, an independent review of the books and operations involving finances will improve the district’s performance, identify other solutions, and ensure transparency.

"The next natural step is to kind of take a look back and say ok, what can we do to improve moving forward? " Murphy said. "What processes need to be streamlined? And how can we do the work that needs to be done to improve our communication with the public and help reinforce the confidence the public has in those processes?"

Murphy said over the past several weeks, he and the vice chair have collaborated with Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins on ways to improve the district’s processes and the board’s work.

"The superintendent has been responsive to questions and again to the feedback that we've provided and recommendations for hey, how can we improve communication with the board and with the community moving forward," Murphy said.

Murphy emphasized that the board’s ultimate mission remains centered on student achievement.

"Our educators and students are doing an incredible job each day, and ultimately their success is going to be the measure of our success," the chair added.

The meeting is set for Tuesday, September 16th, at 5:30 p.m.
