With spending under the microscope, Fayette schools set to post salary info

Fayette County Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins says he will have his team create a publicly-available list of employees and district salaries. The move comes as part of a larger push for transparency as the district seeks to calm budget concerns.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Liggins has privately agreed to launch a requested database cataloging the salary information, putting the school system in line with a variety of other public entities.

Liggins was asked about creating the list during a special budget meeting last Thursday. School board member Monica Mundy said she understands why making the numbers public may be uncomfortable for some, but she views it as standard practice and another way for the district to respond to calls for greater transparency.

"I've been a public servant about pretty much all of my career, and my salary has always been public. Need it be when I've been working for the state or different universities, you could always see my name, my title, the department or where I work, and what my salary is," she explained. "And I think that goes a long way with really showing the public that we're being open and that they can see where their money is being spent."

The lion's share of the FCPS budget goes towards salaries. A raise for teachers and staff is among the priorities set by the board in the upcoming budget.

The request comes as the district works to retool its upcoming spending plan with an unpopular tax increase now off the table and a new set of proposals from Liggins about how to plug a $16 million shortfall next year.
