LexPark fees for 'safety violations' are going up

Parking fines are on the rise in downtown Lexington, but not the kind drivers are most likely to receive.

The list of violations that will be accompanied by increased fines does not include things like paying without parking or staying past the limits — instead they fall under the umbrella of what LexPark is calling "safety violations."

In general, they refer to parking in places one isn't supposed to park. Think obstructing traffic, parking in a crosswalk or a fire lane. In many cases, the fines will jump from $35 to $50 as long as they're paid within 10 days.

Parking pass rates are going up at the Victorian Square parking garage — with a general monthly pass going from $90 to $104.

It's the first time the safety-oriented fines have gone up in nearly a decade.
