UK raises final steel beam of massive new health facility

University of Kentucky PR

Construction of what will be the University of Kentucky's largest facility was marked Thursday by what's known as a "topping out" ceremony — with UK alumni, faculty, staff and students from the health colleges signing the final steel beam before it was hoisted into place.

With critical healthcare provider shortages in parts of Kentucky, one goal of the new Michael D. Rankin MD Health Education Building is to meet that challenge.

UK President Eli Capilouto said the construction milestone is just the latest reminder of the school's commitment to filling that gap.

"It is a symbol of our promise, our promise to Kentucky, to prepare more physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and public health leaders who will serve communities in our commonwealth," he said.

According to UK officials, about 5,000 healthcare professionals will be needed within their network over the next decade to satisfy growing needs in the state. Rural areas are a particular concern.

Located at the intersection of University and Huguelet Drives, the Rankin building will enable increased enrollment across a number of departments — with the College of Medicine's medical education program growing by 44%, the College of Health Science growing its ranks by 30%, and the College of Public Health expanding by 50%.

The facility, which is designed with flexibility and experiential learning in mind, is set for completion in 2027.
