Move-in at UK means extra traffic, but there's an app that'll ease some of the stress

Close to 6,000 students are moving in this week at the University of Kentucky.

It's all hands on deck at UK as lines of vehicles snake through campus, parents help students haul gear into residence halls, and massive bins fill with all the leftover cardboard from new furniture and devices.

Lisa Williams is acting co-executive director of auxiliary services. Today, that means she's got a safety vest on and she's directing traffic.

"It's a busy day here on campus today," she acknowledges.

For those venturing into UK to get themselves or their students all set up, a number of no parking zones are in place, including along Avenue of Champions, MLK, Lexington Avenue, and others.

Many of the same streets are one way from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For families, Williams encourages everyone to "make sure that they're being patient and staying calm. We're going be really excited to welcome them, but we know it's a stressful experience for parents, families, students in general.

For folks who are not on campus, Williams notes that the school continued its partnership with Waze, "so that actually will tell anyone where our roads are blocked."

Needless to say, 6,000 would be far too many students to move in on a single day. So Move-In Day actually spans several days, running all the way through Wednesday.
