In response, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System is working to strengthen mental health resources at all sixteen campuses statewide.

Survey responses collected last year from more than 2,500 students reveal widespread struggles with mental health and anxiety.

The problem is serious enough to impact academic performance, said Christopher Hetherington, executive director for strategic enrollment management at KCTCS.

"So these really indicate to us," said Hetherington, "that there is a need for us to address these mental health concerns, within our campus communities across Kentucky."

The Mental Health Strategy designed by KCTCS was created in partnership with The Jed Foundation, the Healthy Minds Network, and the Council on Postsecondary education.

It includes peer wellness programs, expanded mental health services, and faculty and staff training.

Hetherington added that a critical component of the plan is to provide support to the nearly 90% of students who feel stressed about money.

"What we're trying to do is make sure that wherever a student is and whatever college they're at," said Hetherington, "that they're able to access the right resources to meet their needs at that time."

Pew Research Center data finds a growing portion of Americans are struggling with mental and behavioral health issues, and a significant number are unable to access the resources they need.
