Ball is the latest Republican to challenge the governor over the potential fraud first reported by WDRB-TV. In a letter to Bashear, Ball is asking how the governor plans to respond to accusations of a black market to sell driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, a charge made in a whistleblower complaint.
The auditor also noted concerns about the timeline, saying the investigation into the allegations is nearly eight months old and the public "has yet to hear any updates."
Beshear took questions on the matter in a Wednesday briefing, telling reporters the licensing irregularities were discovered during a routine check by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and all employees involved were hired through a temp agency and have been terminated.
As for further details, the governor said his office is under some constraints as the probe continues.
"This has been an ongoing investigation that includes a number of different offices. And at different times, even federal agencies have given us different instructions about what we can and cannot talk about," he responded.
Beshear has not confirmed whether the credentials were sought or obtained by undocumented immigrants, but he has said portions of the whistleblower's complaint are "not factual and did not follow how the original investigation went."
