Denise Gray leaving Lexington council for new role

Sixth District Councilwoman Denise Gray is leaving public office in Lexington and taking a position in Milwaukee.

"Today I am announcing my resignation from office as of July 31st," Gray said. "I am stepping down to follow my passion and my purpose."

That passion Gray said is leading her to an executive role with Nia Imani Family, a nonprofit that provides transitional housing and holistic support for women and families recovering from trauma.

During Gray’s tenure in city government which began in 2022, she alleged that she was sexually harassed and assaulted on two separate occasions by then fellow councilmember Brenda Monarrez. Gray said her decision to step down and accept the job in Milwaukee had nothing to do with the situation with Monarrez who no longer serves the fourth district. She lost her seat to Emma Curtis, the first openly transgender woman to hold office in Lexington.

Mayor Linda Gorton has 30 days from Gray’s last day in office to appoint her replacement.
