Following Friday's delivery of a batch of high-profile Supreme Court decisions, Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr announced new legislation.

Barr, who is also seeking a Trump endorsement in the 6th District US Senate race, is working to officially end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants.

The measure—dubbed the Protecting American Citizenship Amendment—would make good on a Trump administration pledge to end the practice enshrined in the Constitution.

Barr said in a statement that "radical district judges" have been hampering the president's agenda. He said his intent is to "immediately put an end to this debate."

The conservative majority on the court left open the possibility that the birthright citizenship changes could remain blocked nationwide, according to the Associated Press.

Lupe Rodríguez, executive director of National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, said the SCOTUS decision “opens the door to discrimination, statelessness, and a fundamental erosion of rights for those born on American soil.”

UPDATE (6/27): The move by Barr represents a break from his previous stated position. In 2018, the congressman told the Lexington Herald-Leader he didn't think the change was necessary.
