Open Studio: Funding cuts 'unprecedented, devastating' for arts groups across the state

Kentuckians For The Arts

WUKY launches a new weekly Arts feature we're calling Open Studio.

In early May, NPR reported that the Trump administration had started canceling National Endowment for the Arts grants. This cancellation of support came hours after President Trump proposed eliminating the agency from the federal budget. Nonprofit arts organizations across the country are now reevaluating how they're going to fill the gap left by the cancellation of those funds, including several organizations right here in Kentucky. Kentuckians for the Arts Chair Lori Meadows calls the move unprecedented and says if the cuts are allowed to stand and NEA grants indeed disappear, arts organizations across the state will be devastated, leaving some with no choice but to cancel programs. She talks about it with WUKY interviewer Tom Musgrave.
