A Lexington neighborhood relocated 20 years ago is opening the doors to its long-awaited community center

Lexington's Davis Park Community is adding a new amenity.

"Welcome to our community center. Welcome home!"

Byron Mitchell isn't just the president of the board of the Lexington Community Land Trust, which will operate the center. He's seen the Davis Park community's evolution from day one.

"I've lived in this neighborhood, been here all my life. So to see the changes from what it used to be 25 years ago to now, there is a great opportunity to say we we're moving forward," he said.

Inside, the first room doubles as a basketball half-court, with a large conference room and technology space extending back into the building. Mitchell says the multipurpose space will host speakers, games, and other activities — many aimed at youth in the neighborhood, which can feel sealed off from surrounding areas.

"It's really important because the thing is kids say that they don't have nothing to do, so a lot of them say they get in a situation, or they get in some trouble," he explained. "So to have a community center, to have a lot of activities for them, that keeps them out of whole lot of things."

Davis Park, once known as the tight-knit Davis Bottoms, was moved from its old location two decades ago to make room for the Newtown Pike extension.

The center will also serve as the Land Trust's permanent home.
