Fayette schools will need to make up for millions amid shortfall

Another $16 million in cuts are coming to the Fayette County Public School system. That's on top of across-the-board department belt-tightening.

Fayette school departments were already buckling down with 20% reductions, but now the district will need to trim another $16 million from its General Fund budget.

Fayette Superintendent Demetrius Liggins said a number of factors are driving the cuts.

"It's just a combination of things that have led us to this place. It's unfortunate, but this is happening all over the nation at this point," he said.

Costs for areas ranging from food to insurance have outpaced revenue as enrollment remains flat.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the district may try to fill the budget shortfall by expanding facility rentals, seeking more grants, or adding more taxes.
