Two earthquakes felt in Kentucky over weekend

Kentucky Geological Survey

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake occurred on Saturday morning near Knoxville, Tennessee. While the epicenter was in Tennessee, it was felt in parts of Kentucky, particularly in the eastern part of the state.

A more minor 2.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded in central Kentucky near High Bridge in Jessamine County at 3:41 a.m. Sunday. Nicholasville, Danville, High Bridge, Frankfort, and Richmond residents reported feeling the quake.

Kentucky is not typically known for seismic activity, but the state does experience occasional minor earthquakes. The New Madrid Seismic Zone extends into western Kentucky and is a known source of such activity.
