Kentucky is in a holding pattern regarding federal assistance requested to help with recovery efforts from recent flooding. Governor Andy Beshear says help will come quickly if President Trump signs off.

Beshear has asked for individual assistance, public assistance to help Kentucky counties and cities recover, and direct federal assistance, with individual applications filed first. The Governor says he has had ongoing conversations with FEMA representatives, and they are ready to hit the ground running.

"Provided this is signed, they know this is gonna be a very large endeavor where we're gonna have disaster recovery centers in dozens of counties," said Beshear. "They understand the way that we're doing it, and they have the expectation that if the president signs off on the declaration, that we will be adding more counties as we go."

Beshear says the first request was for individual assistance and will provide immediate needs dollars for things like cleaning supplies and up to $40,000 for individuals to begin to rebuild.

"The greatest impact has been felt by families who had their homes flooded. Significant costs will be associated with the loss of property and home repair. And, unfortunately, this storm struck many areas that have been flooded time and time and time again," Beshear said.

In the request, the Governor asked for Individual Assistance for 13 counties and Public Assistance and Direct Federal Assistance for 33 counties. The Governor stressed that these are just the initial counties, to make the best case for assistance, and more counties may be added if the President signs the initial applications.
