David O'Neill has taken a social media to inform the public of the resources available to them in a four-part video series.
"Hi. It's that time of year. Free assessment notices are in the mail. Protest period is open," he says. "And all of you are not only welcome but encouraged to conference with me about your assessments if you think we missed the mark."
O'Neill says reassessments and property values for 2025 have been posted on the Fayette PVA website for about a week. Now he wants to inform residents more about the notices.
"The last several years property values have been going up so much, and there's been a lot of misunderstanding about what's driving it... and how we go about coming up with these numbers," O'Neill adds. "I think they can be shocking to people if they're if they're not really paying attention to the real estate market."
The video series explains the contents of the reassessment notice, how values are placed on properties, and also the includes a sales map of houses sold in neighborhoods. It also encourages residents to participate in the protest process so homeowners can get more accurate assessments of their properties.
"If you go to the bank and want to get a loan for your house, then they will make you get an appraisal. And an appraiser will come out and go through your house inside and out and spend a significant amount of time, and it's it's a pretty accurate look at what the value is, whereas we don't do that at all," O'Neill explains. "We just drive by the outside of the house. We don't come in at all. So the only way that we can get a really accurate number is if the property owner participates in the protest process and gives us information."
