Governor set to apply for individual disaster assistance

Associated Press

Applications for public assistance to help counties and local governments typically are the first to be submitted, but the governor says his administration is changing their approach to "prioritize getting families help first."

"If approved, it will provide, I think, about $750 just in initial help. That's not the total," Beshear said. "I know that rumor or misinformation went around before, but that's immediate needs and cleaning supplies. And then there's, I think around 42,000 that has a ceiling, that's available to to families and individual assistance."

More than 70 counties across the state have declared a state of emergency, but Beshear says the initial application only lists about a dozen counties.

"The reason we're doing this is, we want to make our best case to get that first round in, and then we will add counties after that. Now we've been through enough of these. We know that is the fastest, most effective, and most efficient process to do it. Bashir assures Kentuckians more will be added to the list," said Beshear.

Once the application is approved by President Trump, Besehar anticipates things will move quickly on the ground with FEMA.

"They are already making preparations provided the president signs off on it on where disaster recovery centers will be. They recognize it's gonna be a massive operation for FEMA given, how many counties have been hit."

And more counties are expected to be affected this weekend. Several rivers in Western Kentucky have yet to crest.
