15-year-olds, rejoice! You're now in line for a learner's permit in Kentucky

Governor's Office

Kentucky teenagers can get behind the wheel at age 15 under a bill now signed into law.

Gov. Andy Beshear put his signature on House Bill 15, adding Kentucky to the majority of states that allow teenagers to get their learner's permit at 15 — but not without some playful prodding from his own teenage children, Lila and Will, who pre-taped a segment with their dad.

"Hey Will," Beshear says, getting a staged visit from his son.

"Hi Dad."

"What's going on?"

"So I just thought we needed to have a father-son conversation.

"Okay. About what?"

"House Bill 15."

"Fine, Ill sign it."

"I was hoping you'd say that," Will says, with a copy of the bill and pen handy.

"To all the 15-year-olds out there, drive safely," the governor adds.

Under the new law, which is set to take effect immediately, the learner's permit age would be lowered to 15 while all other requirements — from the sixty hours of driving practice to the six month wait to apply for a full license — will remain in place.
