On Monday, mayor Linda Gorton paid tribute to the horse Lexington named for his hometown.
"We are here today for a very special reason. Today, March, is the 170 birthday of Lexington, the famous racehorse who helped make our community the horse capital of the world."
In his time, Lexington was known as the fastest horse in the world, and he passed down those impressive genes to new generations of racehorses and stallions, including Secretariat, Citation, War Admiral, and more recently, Tapit, Affirmed, and Justify. The impact of his legacy can be seen on race tracks globally every single day, but also more locally as a beloved mascot.
"The city's modern logo features that famous oil painting by Edward Troya, and, of course, the logo of Visit Lex is none other than Big Lex."
This year, the model horse brand, Breyer, will also celebrate Lexington in their lineup.
