“These tariffs are a bad idea and it’s not just me that’s saying it.”
Governor Andy Beshear is adamant that tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imports from Mexico and Canada will hit the wallets of everyday Kentuckians.
“A President who was elected to lower prices is actively taking steps that are raising prices. Now a tariff on Canada is going to raise the price of gas and raise the price of meat in our grocery stores. You know the amount that raises? That’s the Trump tax because he’s the individual who put those tariffs on that we the American people are going to pay.”
Canada imports about $40 million of Kentucky bourbon every year and this week, some provinces and territories in Canada have pulled American-made alcohol from the shelves, and that includes Kentucky Bourbon.
During his weekly Team Kentucky briefing on Thursday, Beshear said he reached out to Canadian officials, asking them to consider that their retaliatory tariffs to be designed to only affect areas that are not speaking out against them.
“We are. Kentucky’s two Senators, and its’ Governor, me, are speaking out against this move.”
Trump has put a one-month pause on 25% tariffs on most goods from Mexico and some imports from Canada.
