Governor Andy Beshear posted on social media late Saturday night that he has written to President Donald Trump requesting an emergency disaster declaration for Kentucky due to severe weather impacting the state.

The declaration would make federal funding available to support recovery and cleanup efforts in affected areas.

The Governor said he has also spoken directly to Homeland Security Secretary Krisit Noem and the acting Director of FEMA.

Beshear declared a state of emergency ahead of the storms on Friday and activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center along with the National Guard.

Dozens of swift water rescues had been reported as of Saturday night and at least one person has died after driving into floodwaters. We are awaiting confirmation of a possible second vehicle being swept away with two people inside.

State Parks are being utilized for Kentuckians who have been displaced by the storms.
