Lexington's improved snow response plan moves forward

LFUCG

Crews charged with snow and ice removal from roadways in Fayette County couldn't keep up following two massive storms at the start of 2025. To improve future storm response, LFUCG council members are backing a plan that includes adding new equipment.

Nancy Albright, Lexington's Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works told council members during their scheduled meeting Thursday night, that purchases are in the works.

Five new trucks could arrive by the end of the month and three additional tanker trucks are being purchased.

"We're in the process of starting the purchase of those now. We're putting the specs together," said Albright. "They hope they'll be here by, gosh, eight months."

Those trucks will be used to apply salt brine and beet heat to roads. The plan also proposes adjusting priority routes and utilizing parks employees and private contractors to help clear neighborhoods if crews with the Streets and Roads Department become overburdened.
