Alison Lundergan Grimes served as Kentucky’s secretary of state from 2012 to 2020. Her father served in the Kentucky House from 1980 to 1985 and 1987 to 1989 and was the chairman of the KDP.
Jerry Lundergan and a codefendant were convicted in 2019 of funneling illegal contributions to the failed 2014 U.S. Senate campaign of Lundgergan's daughter, Alison Lundergan Grimes.
He reported to prison in November 2021 and was released from custody in January 2023 without serving his full sentence.
Lundergan's attorney J. Guthrie True provided the following statement from his client.
"I have taken responsibility for my actions, sought atonement, and am working to make a positive difference in the lives of the most vulnerable, including the homeless, those recovering from addiction, and those re-entering society. I am grateful for the President’s action; it offers healing to my family and confirms that our justice system is grounded in forgiveness."
Spokesperson Andy Westberry released a statement on behalf of the Republican Party of Kentucky saying in part, “This pardon is yet another example of Joe Biden and Kentucky Democrats believing in ‘rules for thee, but not for me.' Thankfully, the Biden administration—corrupt even in its final moments—has now been relegated to the trash heap of history."
