Gov. Beshear confirms six winter storm related deaths

Shoveling snow appears to have led to several of those losses and they could have been prevented.

During his weekly Team Kentucky press briefing Thursday, Governor Andy Beshear said state Emergency Management and Department for Public Health officials verified the fatalities between January 5th and 11th due to injuries or medical emergencies.

“I'm also sorry to report that many, if not most of these deaths, were due to cardiac events from shoveling snow.”

More snow and freezing temperatures are in the forecast for next week and we still have nine more weeks of winter ahead.

“Look, I know everybody wants to get their driveway shoveled as fast as they can and to get it behind them,” Beshear said. “But when we lose, you know, 6 people to a storm like this, and we know, preventable. We just want to make sure that people are careful, again, when we get more snow, or we face another one of these.”

Health experts say if you do need to do outside work, bundle up, stay hydrated and rest. If you are shoveling snow, do so in small amounts and take frequent breaks.
