After a week-long delay because of winter storm Blair, district representatives of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council were sworn in on Sunday at the Lexington Senior Center.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton told new members, “It's quite a responsibility and quite an honor as well as an opportunity for each of you council members.”

Gorton added that Lexington voters have put their trust in them to "make weighty decisions on serious issues.” Like the need for continued affordable housing, safe streets, a new government center, land use planning, and a balanced budget.

Vice Mayor Dan Wu called this group the most diverse council in the city's history.

“With representation from the LGBTQ plus community, communities of color, our first transgender council member, not to mention maintaining a majority woman council, and now I believe our youngest council ever,” Wu said. “As Lexington continues to be a diverse and inclusive place, I am very proud to lead a council that can truly represent its people.”

The Urban County Council will have its first official meeting of this session on Tuesday, January 14th.
