'Snow Days!' Fayette County Public Schools close for the rest of the week

Winter storm Blair has extended kids' holiday break by another week. Students were set to return to classes on Monday but the district has canceled school for the rest of the week due to icy roads and plummeting temperatures.

The district released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:

"Fayette County continues to experience the strong effects of Winter Storm Blair. Due to this and after a thorough assessment, we have decided to CANCEL school for the rest of the week (Thursday, January 9, 2025, and Friday, January 10, 2025)."

"The safety of our students and staff is our priority when making these decisions. Many of our side roads in the county are still inaccessible, making it difficult for our buses to navigate their routes safely. Also, frigid temperatures forecasted for the early morning hours pose a risk to students waiting at their bus stops. Combined with heating and other storm-related challenges at several of our school buildings, it is not safe to hold in-person classes at this time."

"Many of you have asked about NTI vs. Traditional Closure. Because many of our students do not have their Chromebooks at home due to the storm hitting right after winter break, we are not able to implement Non-Traditional Instruction Days (NTI). As a result, these days will be considered Traditional Snow Closures and NOT NTI Days."

"Evening and after-school activities that were scheduled for Thursday and Friday are also canceled."
