I-75 shutdown serves as reminder, black ice remains

Kentucky Department of Transportation

I-75 northbound between exit 104 (Athens Boonesboro) and exit 108 (Man O' War) in Lexington is now open, but that stretch of interstate came to a standstill Wednesday morning because of several wrecks caused by icy roads.

Lexwrecks reported that first responders were initially called to assist with a single-vehicle non-injury collision in the northbound lane. Officers found "severe ice" on a bridge and shut the area down so plows and salt trucks could tackle the problem.

Transportation officials say even if the roadways appear clear, slow down. Black ice is still a problem and when temperatures fall below 15 degrees, salt and brine become ineffective, leaving slick spots.
