Despite a wintry mix that continues to deal a blow to the commonwealth, all indications are that lawmakers will convene Tuesday — with some traveling from the far ends of the state to gavel in for day 1 of the 30-day session.
Gov. Andy Beshear said he's been in contact with legislative leaders.
"I've provided information, to both the Senate president and the Speaker about what this weather event was going to to be like. And they're considering the safety of all their members. But from everything I know, the legislative schedule will go on as planned," he told reporters during a briefing Monday.
While the opening days of legislative sessions are often filled with formalities, swearing in ceremonies, and little in the way of substantive work on bills, legislators have indicated they hope to move fast on a half-percentage-point reduction in the income tax.
The General Assembly will have a four day start, followed by a three week break, then get moving in earnest in February.
The legislative calendar can be shifted to accommodate weather and other interruptions, but it takes place within windows laid out by state law. In odd numbered years, sessions may not last more than 30 legislative days and cannot extend beyond March 30.
This year's is set to end March 28.
