'It's the fear of every parent': Gov. Beshear focuses on school safety

AP

Following the deadly shooting at a school in Wisconsin, Kentucky’s governor reiterated his administration's commitment protecting students in the commonwealth.

"I mean we live in a world where we worry when our kids go to school," Gov. Andy Beshear, a parent of two high schoolers, said Thursday.

The governor talked about the steps his administration and lawmakers have taken to ensure safety resource officers are on campus.

"I wish we didn't have to have one. But if that worst case happens, I want a highly-trained individual that's there, ready and willing to protect my kids and everyone else's. Every year, we're making great strides at how many more SRO's we have out there in our public and in our private schools," Beshear said. "I was also at the ribbon cutting for the new Woodford County High School yesterday, and in every school we're building or renovating we are adding new security measures to the physical plant, to the physical design."

Some of those safety measures include dual door entry and security checks.
