Outside and inside, Lexington's Blue Grass Airport is hopping.
"The holiday travel season is here" says Lauren Simmerman, community relations manager for Blue Grass Airport. She tells WUKY that last Thursday and Friday were their busiest days, and this Tuesday wasn't far behind in numbers.
"TSA is predicting a record-breaking Thanksgiving travel season. So, I think just keep that in mind. Right? Like, give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport." Simmerman said, "Maybe enjoy some time at a restaurant to kick off your travel the right way but just give yourself plenty of time and be patient."
And AAA estimates nearly 80 million people will travel the US over the holiday, 72 million by car, and about six million will take to the skies, like this group of 24 heading back to California. "Brian, here's both yours. Thank you." And UK freshman Ethan Heintz, who's going home to Florida for a home cooked meal or "two, or three, or more." He says so far, it's been smooth sailing.
"I got here pretty quick, and I go to Charlotte. So hopefully, that is pretty good." Heintz says he's keeping up to date with his flight status through the airline's mobile app, something Simmerman recommends, especially if the weather gets dicey anywhere in the US over the next few days.
"You know, I think a great thing to keep in mind when you're traveling is, especially out of Lexington. Like, we have a lot of passengers that are going to be connecting. Right? Like, you're not necessarily going directly to your end destination from here. So, look at the weather in cities that you're connecting in as well, not just your end destination because that could have impacts on your flights too."
Simmerman also reminds you to check the TSA website for a list of restricted items and items you can take with you as long as they are packed in your checked luggage.
