Multi-million-dollar renewable battery facility coming to Shelbyville

Associated Press

e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. specializes in the design, manufacturing, and integration of battery energy storage systems tailored for utility-scale applications. The company made history by powering the 2024 Superbowl with renewable energy for the first time.

e-storage President Colin Parkin said initial production capacity will be three-gigawatt hours annually with an expected expansion to six gigawatt hours.

We asked e-storage Parkin what that technology means to everyday consumers.

“We can take energy generated from different sources, renewables, different power sources and we can store that energy,” Parkin said. “We can shift that energy from daytime production into the early evening when demands are high. We can dispatch that energy at any time of the day we need to. In addition, these batteries provide additional support on the grid so they stabilize the grid and the power supply to the consumer.”

The Governor added that utility-scale energy storage systems at Shelbyville Battery manufacturing will create the most efficient and cost-effective use of energy.
“The idea here that we can store when it’s less expensive to make and push it out when it would otherwise be more expensive to make is going to help our families but it’s also going to ensure that we have power at all times,” Beshear said.

This is the third-largest jobs announcement during Beshear's tenure as Governor and the largest economic development project in Shelby County's history.
The Governor believes this announcement will spur other companies to open up shop in Kentucky.

“Mass creates gravity and so we’ll see other supply chain companies, other companies wanting to locate here.” Beshear believes “As you look at what we’re doing in batteries, bigger and better than any other state, you see the growth. So we’re going to see more than just these 15 hundred jobs because of this announced investment.”

Parkin said limited production will start at the facility in mid-to-late 2025.
