'We'll see': Beshear weighs in on possible tariffs in Trump's second term

Stephen B. Morton

President-Elect Donald Trump made universal tariffs part of his economic platform during his most recent campaign that won him reelection, proposing a 20% tax on imports from all countries and 60% on goods coming from China. Karyn Czar reports.

During his weekly press briefing, Governor Andy Beshear was asked how he anticipated those numbers could impact Kentucky.

“My hope is that a President that ran on decreasing inflation and making things more affordable won’t put policies into place that will raise prices because that’s what happens with tariffs.” Beshear said, “If something costs ten dollars right now and a 20% tariff is put on it, it’s going to cost $12. A tariff is ultimately passed along to the consumers.”
The Governor added that he can’t analyze the possible effects on the Commonwealth until he sees a plan.

“I have some concerns but at the same time we haven’t seen what they’re going to be and where they’re going to be.”

Beshear said he plans to work alongside the incoming administration as he “would with any” to continue growing Kentucky’s economy. The Governor said he remains hopeful that any changes will be positive and promises to look for ways to support industries if they begin to feel a negative impact.
